STORAGE POSITION ist Teil einer großen Musiker-Gemeinschaft, die ihren Mitgliedern kostenlos kurze Klang-Passagen ("Loops") zur Verfügung stellt, aus denen sich neue Songs entwickeln lassen – vergleichbar mit einer weltweiten Band, die sich immer wieder aus neuen Mitgliedern zusammensetzt. Sowohl akustische Instrumente als auch Synthesizer-Sounds bereichern dabei die Auswahl an Klängen.

Mit einem Sequenzer-Programm lassen sich diese Loops kürzen, transponieren oder mit Effekten versehen und so, ergänzt um eigene Aufnahmen, zu vollkommen neuen Stücken verweben. Für Live-Auftritte ist diese Art des Musizierens nicht gedacht – dafür kannst du die Musik jederzeit hören und die Videos zu den Alben ansehen.

STORAGE POSITION is part of a large community of musicians that offers its members short sound passages ("loops") free of charge, out of which new songs can be created – comparable to a worldwide band that keeps gaining new members. Both acoustic instruments and synthesizer sounds enrich the resulting selection of sounds.

A sequencer program lets these loops be shortened, transposed or given effects, weaving them together with original recordings into completely new pieces. This way of making music isn't meant for live performance, but you can listen to it any time and watch the videos made for each album.

Seit 1998 veröffentlicht Dieter Uhlmann unter dem Namen STORAGE POSITION instrumentale Musik, die Landschaften, Länder und Tiere hörbar macht. Aus dem ersten Album „Tales of Dolphins and Whales“ ist inzwischen eine Sammlung von 29 Musikreisen geworden – jede mit eigenem Thema, eigenen Klangfarben und einem Video zu jedem Titel.

Jede Musikreise besteht aus neun bis vierzehn Titeln. Die Videos zeigen die Landschaften, Inseln oder Tiere, von denen die Musik erzählt. Auf dieser Seite wechselt dazu passend die Landschaft im Hintergrund – Wüste, Berge, Meer oder Weltraum –, sobald du ein Album einlegst.

Since 1998, Dieter Uhlmann has been releasing instrumental music under the name STORAGE POSITION that lets you hear landscapes, countries and animals. His first album, “Tales of Dolphins and Whales”, has grown into a collection of 29 musical journeys – each with its own theme, its own sound and a video for every track.

Each musical journey has nine to fourteen tracks. The videos show the landscapes, islands or animals the music tells of. On this site, the landscape in the background changes to match – desert, mountains, sea or space – as soon as you insert an album.

Von den Meeren bis ins WeltallFrom the oceans to outer space

Die Reisen führen zu den Delfinen und Walen der Ozeane, in Tropfsteinhöhlen, durch Wüsten und zu den faszinierenden Tieren unserer Erde. Später folgen ganze Kontinente – Afrika, Südamerika, Nordamerika, Australien und Asien – sowie die höchsten Berge der Welt und die Vulkane rund um den pazifischen Feuerring.

Einen eigenen Schwerpunkt bilden Inselwelten: von Island, Schottland und Irland über die Kanaren, die Azoren, Madeira und Kap Verde bis zu den Seychellen, Polynesien, Indonesien und den Malediven. Zwei Alben verlassen die Erde und reisen durch unser Sonnensystem und in die Tiefen des Weltraums.

Die Titel tragen die Namen der Orte und Motive, die sie beschreiben – etwa „Sandstorm“ und „Caravan“ auf „Desertlife“, „Aurora“ und „Midnight Sun“ auf „Scandinavia’s Northern Highlights“ oder die einzelnen Azoren-Inseln von São Miguel bis Corvo.

The journeys lead to the dolphins and whales of the oceans, into dripstone caves, through deserts and to the fascinating animals of our planet. Later albums cover whole continents – Africa, South America, North America, Australia and Asia – as well as the highest mountains in the world and the volcanoes around the Pacific Ring of Fire.

Island worlds are a focus of their own: from Iceland, Scotland and Ireland to the Canary Islands, the Azores, Madeira and Cape Verde, the Seychelles, Polynesia, Indonesia and the Maldives. Two albums leave the Earth altogether and travel through our solar system and into the depths of space.

The tracks are named after the places and subjects they describe – such as “Sandstorm” and “Caravan” on “Desertlife”, “Aurora” and “Midnight Sun” on “Scandinavia’s Northern Highlights”, or the individual Azores islands from São Miguel to Corvo.

So funktioniert der PlayerHow the player works

  • Die Auswurf-Taste links am Gerät öffnet die CD-Auswahl. Ein Klick auf die mittlere CD zeigt Titelliste, Cover und Erscheinungsjahr, ein Doppelklick startet das Album.
  • Play/Pause, Stop sowie Vor und Zurück bedienen das Album wie ein echter CD-Player. Während der Wiedergabe dreht sich die CD hinter einer verspiegelten Scheibe.
  • Die Menü-Taste blendet Wiedergabe-, Audio- und Videooptionen auf das Display, darunter die Titelauswahl, Wiederholen und Zufallswiedergabe.
  • Ein Klick auf das laufende Display zoomt wie mit einer Kamera auf den Player, bis das Musikvideo groß im Bild ist.
  • Die Musik läuft über YouTube. Vor dem ersten Abspielen fragt die Seite einmal nach deiner Zustimmung; widerrufen kannst du sie jederzeit unter „Datenschutz-Einstellungen“.
  • The eject button on the left of the device opens the CD selection. A click on the CD in the middle shows the track list, cover and year of release; a double click starts the album.
  • Play/pause, stop, next and previous control the album just like a real CD player. While it plays, the CD spins behind a mirrored window.
  • The menu button projects playback, audio and video options onto the display, including track selection, repeat and shuffle.
  • A click on the playing display zooms in on the player like a camera until the music video fills most of the screen.
  • The music plays via YouTube. Before the first video, the site asks once for your consent; you can withdraw it at any time under “Privacy settings”.

Wer hinter der Musik stehtThe musician behind the music

Dieter Uhlmann ist Musiker aus Worms. Neben dem Studioprojekt stand er über Jahrzehnte mit Bands auf der Bühne – von „Out“ im Jahr 1971 und „Stairway“ 1976/77 über Round the Hammer, die Blues Goblins und die Santana-Cover-Band Frenesi bis zur JB Lloyd Band. Fotos und Erinnerungen zeigt die Seite Bands von Dieter Uhlmann.

Auf mehreren Alben wirken Gastmusiker mit, etwa die Sängerin Gyöngyi Abdul-Karim, Volker Hofmann oder der amerikanische Fingerstyle-Gitarrist Jim Perona bei der Hommage an David Bowies „Space Oddity“. Mehr zum Studioprojekt erfährst du unter Über Dieter Uhlmann und STORAGE POSITION.

Dieter Uhlmann is a musician from Worms, Germany. Alongside the studio project, he played live with bands for decades – from “Out” in 1971 and “Stairway” in 1976/77 to Round the Hammer, the Blues Goblins, the Santana cover band Frenesi and the JB Lloyd Band.
